ABSTRACT

Purpose: Before you begin to interpret and create a character, it is essential to gather everything the playwright has given you about that character. Find quotes that reveal information about your character from the entire play, even if you are only working on one scene or even only one monologue. In each category, make note of specific lines that lead you to this information so that you keep relating interpretation back to the source text. In the rare case that the character is in a series of plays or that the play is based on a novel, you should gather all you can from those sources as well. The first part of character analysis is objective.
