ABSTRACT

The Bunker Hill Young Marines are an outgrowth of the Bunker Hill Gardens Community Outreach Center, which is a nonprofit, community based organization located in a large apartment complex on the outskirts of a major mid-Atlantic city. In order to understand the origin, purpose and mission of the Young Marines it is necessary to first learn about the Outreach Center and the community it serves. Although the community is, technically, located outside the city limits, Bunker Hill Gardens was characterized by a local police officer as an urban community inhabited by a predominantly low income, minority population. This description is in contrast to the affluent, “mostly white,” suburban neighborhoods farther from the city center.
