ABSTRACT

Thomas A. Dorsey (1899–1993) fused various early twentieth-century piano styles to create traditional Black gospel piano around 1930. His influence in the codification and dissemination of the genre took place first in Chicago, and thence spread to other parts of the country. Traditional Black gospel piano music of the kind developed and disseminated by Dorsey dominated gospel music accompaniment until ca. 1965, whereupon it was either supplanted or co-existed with contemporary Black gospel piano. 1
