V. A SHORT CATECHISM “ A shorte Chatechisme mad[e] by Mr. Cartwright ”. [Ellesmere MSS. 6166 in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. See above, pp. 8, 10, 15.]

The use of the catechism in religious instruction was common in the 16th century in all the Churches. In the Reformed Churches Calvin and Beza prepared catechisms, as did Cranmer in the Prayer Book of 1549, and Knox used this method of imparting and testing knowledge : indeed it has been said that the difference between the outlook of the English and Scottish people is suggested, if not caused, by the fact that the first question in the Anglican Catechism is “ What is your name ? and in the Shorter Catechism “ What is the chief end of man ? ”
