ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I review the malaria control experiences of Brazil, a country with a complex and changeable malaria situation. Brazil has coped with the decentralization of its malaria control program and a paradigm shift from eradication to disease management strategies in the face of economic constraints by prioritizing control activities. Epidemiological classification of geographic regions into malaria risk categories allowed for resources to be concentrated on the highest-priority groups and increased the ability to focus more precisely on the highest-risk population in every locality.
