ABSTRACT

ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SELECTION as an adaptive collaborative management (ACM) research site was the involvement of one or more local communities in some form of forest management. Local people manage forests in all the sites for their own purposes. Although local management is a consistent component on all sites, in some cases, other stakeholders support the management of forests for timber production; in some, external stakeholders emphasize management for conservation purposes; and in still others, outsiders focus on management for both.
