ABSTRACT

Ten momme of American silver was rated at 22.5 momme of Japanese silver money circulating in the market, and as one American dollar silver weighed 7.12 momme, it was exchangeable at 16.02 momme of Japanese silver money, but the fraction 0.02 momme was cut. As a matter of fact, the Gimme, or payment in silver, system was not in practice in Edo and other eastern districts in those days, and it appears that one American silver dollar was exchanged in practice with one Ichibu silver of Tempo issue.
