ABSTRACT
The rate of industrial development over the past century has been remarkable. The world’s industrial production has increased a hundredfold, while population has nearly quadrupled. Our social infrastructure has likewise expanded, with continuing construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, and other facilities. Entirely new types of infrastructure have appeared and are being built, usually associated with new technologies such as air transportation and telecommunications.
