ABSTRACT

Given the limitations of the SEEA, it is useful to consider other approaches to building measures of sustainability, green income, welfare, and environmental impact of the economy. Most of the measures discussed in this chapter are either incompatible with or simply unrelated to the national accounts. It is not clear, however, that we could design indicators that capture the issues of concern and still be consistent with the SNA. It is therefore important to look at the indicators that have been proposed, even if they largely fall outside the realm of environmental accounting in the SEEA sense.
