ABSTRACT

Virtually any case study of a technological controversy, including those Lawless studied, will contain references to each side's experts—the properly credentialed scientists, engineers, and physicians who buttress positions with technical information and undermine the scientific credibility of the other side. Laypeople are often confused and dismayed when one scientist contradicts another's facts. But science does not equal truth, and competent scientists have ample opportunity to disagree with one another, particularly on questions pushing the state of the art.
