ABSTRACT
In this chapter we apply the two models of sustainability, eco-efficiency and the ecosystem model, to the economy to develop more detailed scenarios of what the future may look like. This will provide an insight into emerging landscapes into which your organization can position itself in the future. For more proactive green businesses, these models can be deliberately brought into existence by redesigning supply chains, creating new markets and influencing the legislative and policy frameworks within which the company operates. As pioneering computer scientist Alan Kay famously said ‘The best way to predict the future is to invent it.’ 1 We will be considering these issues further when we look at green business strategy in Chapter 16.
