ABSTRACT
Food systems can be conceptualized as coupled social–ecological systems, in which vulnerability arises from multiple stressors operating across different scales (e.g. temporal, spatial, institutional) and levels on them (e.g. micro to macro). However, this requires a deeper and richer empirical understanding of the relationships between ecosystem services and food security. It also forces society to confront the tradeoffs between key ecosystem services and social welfare outcomes.
