ABSTRACT

THE K IK UYU AND TH EIR LAND The Kikuyu tribe, or, as they call themselves, the Agikuyu, is one of the Bantu-speaking peoples of East Africa and the biggest and most important tribe in Kenya. The Mau Mau terrorist movement which is, at the moment, causing so much trouble, is composed almost entirely of Kikuyu people. In consequence, if we are to understand the underlying causes which made it possible for the movement to come into being and to reach the proportions which it has reached, we must know something of the history and customs of the Kikuyu and, still more, we must understand their relationship over the years with the British Government and the other Europeans who have settled in Kenya.
