ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the prospects for achieving an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable regime of meat production and consumption. The interplay between environmental, economic, social, cultural and moral issues is complex, and much of the research and policy challenge does not reduce to simple bottom-line causal attribution and effect estimation. Further, conclusions and related policies will necessarily vary between populations and locations, and will change over time as technologies and circumstances evolve. Our conclusions are therefore mostly indicative rather than definitive, and we offer them with caution.
