ABSTRACT
Some years ago, when I was living in a Cambridgeshire village, I overheard a young boy speak of his grandmother as his nanna. I later heard the word used very frequently in this kinship sense, not only by the villagers in these parts but also by townsfolk such as college bedmakers, who are themselves often grandmothers. 1
