ABSTRACT

Future population growth will be particularly rapid in the urban areas of less developed regions, averaging 2.4 per cent per year during 2000 to 2030, consistent with a doubling time of 29 years (United Nations Population Division, 2001). The projections of this study mean that the need for urban infrastructure development is bound to increase. The development of roads is one of the prime necessities. This is validated by the current Golden Quadrangle project to develop a four-lane highway connecting India’s four metropoles: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata.
