ABSTRACT

The Purum are now part of the established order, in the textbooks (Fox 1967; Harris 1968; Buchler & Selby 1968) and in theoretical works (White 1963; Livingstone 1969). The Purum tripartite social classification pu\ta-nau\tu, ‘wife-givers’, Ego's groups, ‘wife-takers’, and the marriage rules have already been elucidated in an exemplary, even definitive, manner (Needham 1958). It would seem that no further explanation is necessary; indeed, that the Purum are one of the most thoroughly analysed peoples in the literature.
