ABSTRACT

The effect of poverty and class on population health disparities is well recognized in the literature, as noted by the social gradient hypothesis introduced earlier inChapter4. In many countries, evidence of these disparities has been linked primarily to class differences among population groups. In the United Kingdom, for example, the most common predictor variable used by scholars to study health disparities is occupation, while in other European countries, education and occupation dominate the literature as the primary predictors (Adler, 2006).Ethnic differences between population groups have also been identified as the root causes of health disparities in other countries (Wu et al, 2003).
