ABSTRACT

The Djanggawul have arrived at Arnhem Bay. As they draw near Wagulwagul they hear a duck crying (Song 57); its feathers are stained by the sea foam which splashed it on the way from Bralgu, suggesting that it came to the mainland in the ngainmara, in the form of a sacred rangga emblem. Here are male and female ducks, crying out on their way from Banbaldji (vide Part Three). Djuda have been planted, and from the topmost branches the sacred red breasted parakeets cry (Song 58). This song repeats the previous theme; they ruffle their feathers, drying them in the sun.
