ABSTRACT
Seen from a human standpoint, the sea:
has destructive power that often makes coastal scenery more spectacular than that of adjacent inland country;
accommodates ships, still a major form of freight transport, needing sheltered harbours along the coast; and
supports fish – a limited food resource – and is associated with oil and gas, wind, wave and tidal energy resources.
