ABSTRACT
High buildings may be constructed to save ground space in areas where population density is high but land is scarce. The structure of tall residential and office blocks is described at the end of this chapter, their role with other buildings in Chapter 12, and their displacement on the land as an issue in urban development in Chapter 15. Many other man-made structures rise high for a specific purpose other than saving space. Their main impact on the landscape is visual, often deliberately.
