ABSTRACT
The world is standing on the brink of the worst environmental disaster in hundreds and possibly thousands of years. Over the past century, reliable measurements have shown that Earth is warming, sea surface temperatures and the sea level itself have risen, Arctic sea ice and mountain glaciers have been disappearing, precipitation patterns have changed, crop growing seasons and the ranges of many species have shifted.
