ABSTRACT

This chapter1 is primarily focused on developing a conceptual typology of place-based hydrogen initiatives. Our international review of place-based hydrogen initiatives revealed a plethora of projects, demonstrations, test-beds, ambitions and expectations at a wide range of spatial scales. These include islands, cities, regions, transportation corridors, national plans, cross-border collaboration and supranational initiatives. This exposed a wide range of activity at a range of different spatial scales, seeking to reorient places around the hydrogen economy to establish some sort of competitive advantage in economic, technological or ecological terms (see Chapter 9 of this volume).
