ABSTRACT
I claim to have demonstrated, then, that there is a pattern of cumulative alliances between sub-clans. But clearly no discussion of the empirical facts of repetition is sufficient to establish the existence of an ideology of alliance recognized by the people themselves. Nor, at first sight, does the kinship terminology provide any obvious clues of an alliance pattern.
