ABSTRACT

THERE is no doubt that now, having been introduced to education and medical services, the Fijian people are deeply committed to both. Since the war, education in particular has received considerable attention and expansion. Primary education is now available to all families in the area I was studying and medical services are theoretically available to all free of charge. Secondary education of a high standard (linked to Cambridge University Entrance, and to the New Zealand system) is expanding rapidly, mainly through residential schools. Whereas Mission schools were formerly the most important element in the system, and are still of considerable significance, the Government educational system is now predominant.
