ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the 20th century Switzerland was a poor mountainous country, and now it is one of the most stable economies of the world. That is a result not only of successful financial policy, but also of the stable development of its agricultural sector. The development of agriculture required an inventory of soil resources. From the very beginning soil classification in Switzerland was mostly aimed at practical purposes. The recent version of classification (Arbeitsgruppe ‘Bodenklassifikation und Nomenklatur’, BGS, 2002) is suitable for soil mapping at any scale.
