ABSTRACT

Israel is a country where a desert environment has been converted into flourishing gardens. The task required good knowledge of soil resourses. Soil science in Israel is well known all over the world both for developments in basic soil research and in applied studies. The soil classification of Israel is very pragmatic. It has been used both for scientific purposes and for soil survey at the national scale (Table 22.1) for almost half a century with minor corrections. The soils and sediments not used in agriculture, such as bare rock, underwater deposits and soils of urban and industrial areas, are not included in the classification. Soils deeply transformed by agriculture are not regarded as a separate soil group. The scope of soil classification of Israel
