ABSTRACT

Brazil is a dynamic developing country with a large economy. To a great extent the progress of Brazilian economy is based on its agriculture. Agricultural development required the inventory of soil resources which was started in Brazil at the end of the 1940s and continues until now (Jacomine and Camargo, 1996). Most of the national territory is covered with small-and medium-scale soil maps, including the Amazon region where biological diversity, the highest in the world, is regarded as a national heritage.
