ABSTRACT

The new Austrian soil classification (Nestroy et al, 2000) was prepared to replace the older system (Fink, 1969), which had been used for many years for soil survey and inventory in the country. Though the list of soils did not change much in the new version of the classification, the diagnostics and conceptual bases of the taxonomy were updated according to the actual demands, including the need for integration of national soil databases with the European soil information system and correlation and harmonization with the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) (Nestroy, 2001).
