ABSTRACT

Chimbu life was always changing, but I think it would be possible to describe the pattern of culture as it existed in the period after sweet potatoes became the dietary staple, and before the Taylor-Leahy-Spinks Expedition opened the area up to western contact. Chimbu social life and group activity at this time can be characterized as mobile, with frequent fights, migrations and realignments. I shall attempt to describe the pattern within which modifications occurred, but it must be understood that some facets of Chimbu culture may have been more stable than others, and that these differences in stability cannot be identified without question.
