ABSTRACT

Many of the activities of Chimbu — the use of garden land, feasts, exchanges, and other transactions are fluctuating or cyclical. Indeed, it is most difficult to distinguish the dynamic fluctuations of daily life and those which depend on a cycle or some combination or intersection of cycles. We have seen how a young man reaches maturity, extending his relationships and transactions to a wide range of people. The crucial event in his life is not his initiation, but rather his marriage and the complex of ties which derive from affinal links. Debts are paid in relations with kinsmen and affines, are adjusted and resolved by an exchange of goods.
