ABSTRACT

The passage first of all identifies the šby pš’ of Is 59,20 with those “ w h o have kept the Covenant of G o d ” (the sect). I t then goes on to identify the sect wi th the “they,” “them that fear God,” and the “you” in Mal 3,16.18 (which is ap parently seen as a prophetic text) . I f the allusion to Is 56,1 is intended, then the text also states that the sect wi l l be the recipient of the promises of Is 56,1. The repetition of the phrase “them that fear God” in line 20 supports this interpreta tion of the use of the Isaian quotation. The subsequent citations from Ex and Dt merely contribute to the new composition. They may have been understood as referring to the sect but CD does not point up that aspect. I t merely cites them in a certain sense and uses them for what they can contribute to the work.
