ABSTRACT
When considering the urban system in Germany, especially its network of large metropolitan regions, and RhineRuhr as one important node of this network, one needs first to emphasize that we are dealing with a somewhat specific – perhaps unique – case in North West Europe and even beyond. Some of its special characteristics are shared with Rhine-Main, as discussed in Chapter 13; others make it truly unique.
