ABSTRACT

An intelligent training system has been developed for use by NASA/Johnson Space Center flight controllers in learning to perform satellite deployments from the Space Shuttle. The system is modular and segregates domain-dependent knowledge from generic training knowledge. Its significant features include four cooperating expert systems communicating via a blackboard, support for multiple solution paths, error handling appropriate to the trainee's demonstrated level of skill, and automatic generation of unique training scenarios based on training objectives and a trainee's history of interaction with the system. The system architecture has been used for the development of additional intelligent training systems for use by astronauts and space shuttle ground-support personnel.
