ABSTRACT

While Maoris are proud of the literary and artistic forms handed down to them by their ancestors, they also take a lively interest in other forms, from the popular to the specialized. Defined in terms of ‘what Maoris do often and enjoy doing’ (p. 46), Maori literature and Maori art cover a wide spectrum of media and styles: oral literature and writing in Maori and English, arts and crafts based entirely on natural materials such as wood, flax and stone, and all the modern media including film.
