ABSTRACT
Trying to explain the difference between the Maori way of life and the Pakeha, a Maori friend said: ‘Well, for one thing, Maoris are always going off to hui , taking the whole family and staying there all together for days at a time.’ While Maoris live most of the time in small family households as Pakehas do, they make a conscious effort to get together periodically in the old communal way.
