ABSTRACT

This section outlines the major carbon offset, or institutional ‘carbon neutral’ standards around the world and then compares key differences between them. These standards can be separated into several categories: accounting protocols, programmes that implement such protocols and certify companies or products, and those that certify offset projects and carbon credits. These various standards do not fit neatly into such categories, but rather have a range of characteristics. It is important to note that CCX has its own standards and hence represents a certification system within the CCX market. CCX standards are compared with others, but not discussed again in this section.
