ABSTRACT

There are many versions of the story of childhood vaccination – past, present and future. For many it is a simple and optimistic saga of disease eradication, in which science and technology gradually conquer nature and ignorance in equal measure for humanity's good. Others narrate a story of coercion, control and conspiracy towards deception and even genocidal ends. Yet for many it is a field of heightened anxiety: a balance of the opportunities and dangers that this unfolding and most global of technologies offers to that most intimate, personal and closely observed world which is the nurturing of new life.
