ABSTRACT

Regenerative medicine will certainly make people ‘stronger’. Its unique approach is to regenerate cells, tissues and even organs in situ, to prevent and cure diseases and to repair, restore and enhance functions of damaged and diseased tissues and organs. Common approaches in regenerative medicine include stem cell transplantation, cell therapy, gene therapy and tissue engineering, and combinations thereof. This chapter will only focus on the two relatively new and often related methods – stem cell-based therapy and tissue engineering, and later the engineering challenges for their commercialization and clinical applications.
