ABSTRACT

Indeed, one of the most consequential advances in NBICS is the increasing ability, demand for and acceptance of changing, improving and modifying the human body and allowing it to move beyond species-typical functioning, perceiving the species-typical body as defective, diseased and in need of ‘therapeutic enhancements’. On the level of non-humans, the generation of new life-forms (synthetic biology) is pursued, enhancing biological organisms in terms of their structure, function or capabilities beyond their species-typical boundaries.
