ABSTRACT
This paper is concerned with Greek ideas and institutions rather than with archaeological evidence for settlement patterns. Archaeological research of this type is still backward in Greece; 1 and in so far as archaeologists have worked on settlement patterns, the two subjects which have recently attracted most attention — town planning and land tenure — are precisely those in which ideas and institutions imposed a geometrical pattern on town and landscape.
