ABSTRACT

A Definition Of Man, in any terms, may be undertaken in either or both of two ways. Man, as a living species, may be differentiated from all other species presently alive, or one may attempt to view the evolutionary history of this species, and come to a decision as to when a sequence of ancestral (and collateral) populations ceased to be something else, and reached each of the various points of progression signalized respectively by membership in the Hominidae, the Hominae, Homo, and Homo sapiens. “When” refers to a developmental stage, the appearance of a certain pattern of behavior, rather than to any particular period of time.
