ABSTRACT

The evolutionary development of the Primates has resulted from the sum of the processes of cladogenesis and anagenesis. Cladogenesis, or phylo-genetic branching (Rensch, 1959), is the splitting of a species into two or more species and the ensuing divergence of these species from each other. Anagenesis, or progressive evolution (Rensch, 1959), is the process by which the more highly organized forms of life evolved from the simpler. In the order Primates, cladogenesis is exemplified by the prosimian phylogenies, and anagenesis is exemplified by hominine phylogeny.
