ABSTRACT
Are Savages Custom-bound ? SAVAGES are commonly supposed to be the slaves of custom to a far greater degree than the white man, who by contrast appears as the child of reason. This view has been so often repeated that i t is mistaken for fact. It is high time that i t were challenged, as i t stands in the way of the quest for origins by placing the savage and the white man in watertight compartments, and thus forbidding us to make use of one in order to understand the other.
