ABSTRACT

Concepts of global citizenship (GC) can also include notions of local and national ecological citizenship, although this is currently underemphasized. This chapter briefly considers this issue in relation to education for a sustainable future (EFS) and situates the debate in this context. In considering issues of community and citizenship, we could say that environmental education (EE) has been concerned with human membership of the community of life and our duties towards that community. Development education (DE) has been more concerned with the community of humans and their mutual well-being. Particularly in the UK, the development of EFS has involved the synergy between EE and DE. This chapter considers some of the possible tensions and overlaps between these educations in relation to the local and global.
