ABSTRACT

There are many regulatory schemes currently being used to shape and control agriculture. Here I discuss two that relate to nature conservation and the creation of sustainability (or, more specifically, nitrate levels in groundwater). Both examples are about supranational European Union (EU) policies and their application in a specific locality: the Northern Frisian Woodlands (NFW). The reason for this discussion is twofold: it allows me in Chapter 9 to look at some specific features of Empire and in Chapter 10 to deal in general terms with the central contradiction between Empire and peasantry as contrasting and conflicting modes of ordering.
