ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall discuss the way in which new technologies might help us cope with the two big problems that look likely to limit human mobility: carbon and congestion. There is considerable scope for technological advances to alleviate other problems experienced in the transport sector, including accidents, noise and air pollutants, and indeed many advances which are likely to help with the big problems will be beneficial for these other concerns. However, given constraints on space and the reader's patience, I will not consider these other problems further. I'll first discuss how the carbon footprint of transport might be reduced, and then how technology could help tackle traffic congestion.
