ABSTRACT

On 5 July 2000, in a beautiful park in the centre of Orlando, a large block of ice sat melting in the hot Florida sun. Around the ice were gathered half a dozen television cameras. ‘Get a close-up on the dripping there,’ said one TV reporter to her cameraman; she seemed to be standing as still as possible, so as not to sweat. Newspaper reporters shifted their weight from foot to foot, and radio correspondents thumbed the controls on their voice recorders. The frequent checking of watches added to a general atmosphere of impatience.
