Meade's study of the formation of the customs union between Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, referred to in footnote 1 below, was published as ‘The Building of Benelux, 1943–1960’ in J. E. Meade, H. H. Liesner and S. J. Wells, Case Studies in European Economic Union: The Mechanics of Integration (London: Oxford University Press, 1962), pp. 59–193. Meade also published The Belgium—Luxembourg Economic Union 1921–1939: Lessons from an Early Experiment, Princeton Essays in International Finance no. 25, March 1956, which was reprinted in that volume, and Negotiations for Benelux: An Annotated Chronicle, Princeton Studies in International Finance no. 6, 1957, as well as his famous Professor Dr F. de Vries Lectures of April 1955 on The Theory of Customs Unions (Amsterdam: North-Holland, 1955) and his earlier lectures at the University of Chicago on Problems of Economic Union (London: Allen & Unwin, 1953).
