Corporate Citizenship: Revisiting the Relationship between Business, Good Governance and Sustainable Development

In plenary session at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, Stefan Schmidheiny, chairman of the Business Council for Sustainable Development called for a bold new partnership between business and governments. ‘Business must move beyond the traditional approach of back-door lobbying: governments must move beyond traditional over-reliance on command-and-control regulations’ (Timberlake, 1992).
